During the morning reading block, first grade students at SOBA have been participating in a modified version of the Daily 5. During this time, they meet with their teacher in small, skill focused groups. They also have the opportunity to visit the computer to work on their Reading Eggs accounts, play skill-based games in the Word Work station, or practice their reading fluency by reading to themselves or to a partner.
After students have practiced reading their book several times, they are encouraged to share the story with the class. The class gathers on the carpet for story time and the “teacher” sits in his or her chair to read the story they have been practicing with the class. The readers are both excited for the opportunity to take the spotlight, and proud of what they have accomplished! Reading to the class has encouraged the 1st grade students to read more at both school and home. They have now begun practicing reading at home to bring in their books and read! This year’s SOBA Reading Challenge will be a breeze for 1st grade!
